Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKVP) is the state university of the Varanasi region, founded in February 1921 as Kashi Vidyapith — a national university created outside colonial control on Gandhi's call, funded by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta. It teaches through faculties of Agriculture, Commerce & Management, Education, Humanities, Law, Medical, Social Sciences, Social Work, and Science & Technology, and affiliates more than 350 colleges across Varanasi, Chandauli, Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Sonbhadra.

Born of the Non-Cooperation Movement with Gandhi associated with its inauguration and the philosopher Dr. Bhagwan Das (Bharat Ratna) as first Vice-Chancellor, Kashi Vidyapith became a nursery of freedom fighters and educators. Its alumni include Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's second Prime Minister, and UP Chief Minister Kamalapati Tripathi. Renamed for the Mahatma, it anchors higher education for the common student of Purvanchal, with campuses at Sigra, Gangapur, NTPC Shaktinagar and Bhairav Talab.
