Harish Chandra Post Graduate College, Maidagin is one of the premier seats of learning of eastern Uttar Pradesh — a government-aided college founded in 1866 by Bharatendu Harishchandra, the father of modern Hindi literature, who began it with five students of the locality. Today it runs five full-fledged faculties — Arts, Commerce, Science, Education and Law — with undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, plus BBA and BCA, under affiliation to Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith.

From Bharatendu's five students in 1866, the institution added high-school classes by 1910, intermediate classes in 1939, and undergraduate classes in Arts and Commerce on 4 October 1951 — first affiliated to Banaras Hindu University. Law classes were recognised in 1958. Run by the Harish Chandra Vidyalaya Samiti (registered under the Societies Act of 1860), the college is now affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, is emerging as a research centre in Arts, Science and Commerce, and held its first convocation in January 2026.
