Why this talk opens our language shelf
Every claim we make about the Indic knowledge systems eventually runs through Sanskrit — and Sanskrit’s own tradition thought harder about what language IS than almost any other. Vyakarana (grammar) was never mere correctness-keeping: from Panini through Bhartrihari, it was a full philosophy of how sound, meaning, and world connect. Prof. Varakhedi — among the tradition’s most authoritative living exponents and a pioneer of Sanskrit computational linguistics — is the right voice to open the shelf.
What to listen for
- Shabda and artha: the talk’s frame, as the page introduces it, is that “the Cognition and connotation — Shabda and artha — are not the same but are closely associated” — word and meaning as distinct yet inseparable, the core insight of Indian semantics.
- Language as world-making: how “the world that is created by Language merges the real and the reflection” — the physical world and the conceptual world language builds over it.
- The computation connection: the old claim that Sanskrit’s regularity suits formal and computational treatment — hear how a scholar who actually builds such systems states it carefully, versus how the internet meme states it.
Our note
This opens our Sanskrit & Indian Languages shelf, and pairs with the Pramanas article — shabda (testimony) is itself a pramana, and grammar is what keeps testimony precise.
