In one line

Two volunteers began scrubbing Varanasi’s neglected ghats with their own hands; three days, three hundred kilograms of waste, and a Prime Ministerial mention later, their Mission Prabhu Ghat became the working template for citizen-led seva across thirty cities.

Five key points

  1. It began with presence, not a plan. Imsong travelled to Varanasi after following the clean-up work online — and stayed, because the work in front of her was undeniable.
  2. The ghats named the mission. Kedar Ghat and Gaurikund came first: filthy, then scrubbed, then refilled with water — restoration, not just cleaning.
  3. Shramdaan means the gift of labour. The model asks nothing but hands: groups voluntarily adopt a public place, clean it, and — the hard part — keep maintaining it.
  4. Recognition followed the work. The Prime Minister’s endorsement came a month AFTER the mission’s results — proof that visible seva creates its own momentum.
  5. The template scales: by late 2015, volunteers in 30+ cities had adopted the model — a distributed civic movement grown from one riverfront.

In the speakers’ words

“Some of the most memorable days of my life, to be honest.”

“And in Shailesh’s direction, we cleaned it completely.”

Our note

This is the Kashi our own work stands in — the same ghats we document in our first album and walk on the Kashi & Prayagraj Heritage Yatra. Seva of place and study of place are one discipline; this talk is its founding story in our generation.
