Myth vs Reality of Metanarratives
Every big story about India — invasion, stagnation, rescue — has a construction history of its own. This lecture teaches how to audit a metanarrative.

A metanarrative is a story large enough to organize all the smaller ones: ‘India was always conquered’, ‘the village never changed’, ‘modernity arrived by ship’. This lecture takes three such storylines and does source criticism on the stories themselves — who first told each one, on what evidence, serving what need, and how later scholarship has complicated or collapsed it.
The takeaway is a portable toolkit: four questions any reader can put to any grand claim about the Indian past before granting it belief. History as a discipline of verification, not allegiance.
Attend or revisit: session schedules and recordings are announced on the Indic Lectures page; related reading grows on the History & Civilization shelf.
