Why this yatra

Nowhere else does temple architecture survive at this scale AND remain in worship. The Brihadisvara at Thanjavur — a UNESCO Great Living Chola Temple — raised an 80-tonne capstone two hundred feet without steel; Madurai's Meenakshi complex runs a full ritual day a thousand years on; Mamallapuram shows the tradition experimenting in stone. This yatra teaches you to read all of it: plan, vimana, gopuram, iconography.

In the scriptures and shastras

The Shaiva and Vaishnava Agamas govern how these temples are built and served; the Mayamata and Manasara — the classical vastu-shilpa treatises — supply the grammar of proportion the guides will point to on the stones themselves. The sthala puranas of Madurai and Rameswaram (whose linga the Ramayana ties to Rama's crossing) carry each site's own story.

What you take back

The ability to stand in any Indian temple and see structure, not blur: which century, which dynasty, which agama, and why the plan is the theology. Notebooks full of measured looking — and the case for conservation made where it is most alive.
