The Faculty of Social Sciences hosts BHU's departments of History, Political Science, Sociology, Economics and Psychology, with strong research traditions and large UG/PG cohorts on the main campus. Its History department's work on ancient and early-medieval India complements the university's Indological faculties.

Originally part of the Faculty of Arts, the social-science departments were organised into their own faculty as the university grew; it developed into one of North India's major centres for social-science teaching and research, contributing extensively to the historiography of the Ganga valley and of Kashi itself.
