Founded on 1 May 1956 by Shri Arya Mahila Hitakarini Mahaparishad, the college grew into one of the city's leading centres of women's higher education, adding postgraduate departments, a B.Ed. unit and the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). Its campus houses an archaeological museum, an IGNOU study centre, the Tejaswini women's cell and the Jagrati guidance-and-counselling cell; recent faculty development includes a programme on integrating Indian Knowledge Systems into modern pedagogy. Departments span Arts (A.I.H.C. & Archaeology, Bengali, English, Hindi, Home Science, Music Instrumental, Music Vocal, Philosophy, Sanskrit), Social Science (Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology), Education and Commerce.
